How to add closed captions to your YouTube videos with a computer.
  1. Log-in to YouTube.com with your gmail address and password.
  2. Click on the blue icon that looks like silhouette of human head and shoulders. A drop down menu will appear.
  3. Click on the Creator Studio button from the drop down menu.
  4. Click on the Edit button just to the right of the video you want to caption.
  5. Click on the dark grey “Subtitles and CC” button toward the top of the screen.
  6. Select English from the drop down menu of the Select Video Language pop up box. Then click the blue Set Language button.
  7. To edit your captions, click on the green button that says English to the right of the screen. Then click on the blue Edit button in the bottom right corner. Click the Overwrite button in the pop up box. Place your cursor in the text boxes on the right and type whatever edits are needed into the text of the captions. When you are finished, click the blue Publish Edits button in the bottom right.
  8. To remove the old, unedited captions, click on the green button that says “English (Automatic)” to the right of the screen. Click on the drop down menu to the right that says Actions. Click the “Unpublish” choice in the drop down menu. Then, click the white Exit button in the bottom right.
  9. To test your video’s captions, click on the blue icon that looks like silhouette of human head and shoulders; and then click on the Creator Studio button from the drop down menu. Click on the grey title of your video. Hold your mouse over the video and the video controls will appear. Click on the CC in the bottom right corner of your video controls.
How to create a YouTube Video with a Smart Phone
  1. Download the YouTube App onto your phone from the App Store.
  2. Open the YouTube App on you phone.
  3. Create an account. If you have a gmail account, you can skip this step and move on to #4. Otherwise:
    1. Tap icon that looks like silhouette of human head and shoulders.
    2. Tap “more options” on the bottom left. Choose “Create new account.”
    3. Enter your first and last name, then tap the Next button.
    4. Enter your birthday and gender, then tap the Next button.
    5. Choose a Gmail username that can be used for both your YouTube and Gmail accounts, then tap the Next button.
    6. Choose and then confirm a password, then tap the Next button.
    7. Enter your phone number if you want to be able to use it to sign in or reset your password later, if you forget it, then tap the Next button.
    8. Read the Privacy Policy and Terms of Service and then tap the “I Agree.”
    9. Tap Next button to sign in to YouTube with your new Gmail account!
  4. Log-in to YouTube. Tap icon that looks a silhouette of a human head and shoulders. Use your Gmail address and password to log-in.
  5. To record a new video on YouTube:
    1. Tap icon that looks a silhouette of a human head and shoulders.
    2. Tap red button with white icon that looks like a movie camera.
    3. Agree to allow YouTube to access your camera, microphone, etc.
    4. Tap the white icon that looks like a movie camera in the center of the screen.
    5. Aim the camera on your phone at what you want to record and hit the red button on the bottom of the screen to begin recording.
    6. Record your video footage and then, to finish recording, tap the stop button that is a red square in a white circle at the bottom of the screen.
    7. Watch your recording by tapping the white arrow in the center of the screen.
  6. To edit your YouTube video:
    1. Trim the beginning our ending of your video by dragging the edges of the blue box to only include the portion of the video you wish to use. This can only be done while you have highlighted the Trim feature by tapping on the white scissors icon on the bottom left.
    2. Choose a Filter to change how your video looks by tapping the icon of two overlapping circles in the bottom-center. Scroll through your choices and tap them to see how the color and lighting of your video changes with the various options.
    3. Add music to your video by tapping the musical note icon on the bottom right. Then tap the white circle with the black plus sign at the center. See your range of choices by scrolling up and down and changing categories at the top of the screen. Listen to a song by tapping the black arrow to the song’s left. Choose it to be added to your video by tapping the blue circle with the white plus sign at the center.
  7. To Upload your YouTube video:
    1. Once you are satisfied with your video, tap the blue Next button in the upper right.
    2. Choose a name you with you upload your video under.
    3. Review the Terms of Service for Youtube.
    4. Tap the blue Create Channel bar at the bottom of the screen.
    5. Write a title and a description for your video.
    6. Choose a privacy setting for your video, by tapping on the globe icon that says “Public” and reading the descriptions of your choices of Public, Unlisted, and Private.
    7. Finish uploading your video by tapping the blue Upload icon in the upper right corner. Wait for your video to upload. This is done best on a wi-fi network with a strong connection and it may take a few minutes.
    8. Add tags (words that people can use to search for your video) by tapping on the 3 small, grey circles on the right; click the Edit icon on the menu that pops up, and then type whatever tags you wish beneath the word Tags.
    9. Share your new video with whomever you like by tapping on the 3 small, grey circles on the right and then the Share icon with the grey arrow. Then choose how you wish to share the video.
